Backup camera as rear view

3365 Views 24 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Snipesy
I have a 2017 Colorado. Love it. Does everything I need it to do.

A question. There are times I'm carrying cargo that can block my rear window, so I can't see behind me with the rearview mirror. Is there any way to lock the backup camera on so I can use that to see behind me while I'm driving? Has anyone else ever tried to do this?

Thanks.

On some years, not sure which, you can momentarily turn the rear camera on for 5 or 10 seconds by pushing the home button, then the camera icon may show up, if not, swipe the screen to the left

Thank you for that suggestion! I'll definitely give it a try this afternoon, and report back if it works on my model year.

I just checked my 2017, it does not have it but a friend who has a 2018 does have it,check yours, maybe mine is hidden
2017s will need WAMS to unlock the HMI for this capability, and I don't believe it's a permanent on, it just adds the short camera view for 10-15 seconds, IIRC.
As others have noted it's definitely possible. However, only momentarily - you get about 5 seconds. Good for a quick check if needed, not as a replacement for a mirror.
Your 2 outside mirrors don't allow you to see behind you?

All them delivery vans.
All them semis.
They can't see behind them. They have no cams. All they have is their outside mirrors.

I see what you're saying, but I'll also say that the rear view mirror on my bolt is a camera 100% of the time and it is awesome.

I re-checked my 2017 and it does not have it, what is WAMS? I have lived with out it for 50 + years of driving so probably not gona do the wams thing anyway, just wondering
Just buy a cheap license plate rear view camera with a monitor and power it directly on a switch.

White Automotive Media Services HMI Unlock - $199 and you have to send in your HMI to do it.

Thanks, that looks like a good option!

Yeah, my 2017 doesn't have that option. Thanks anyway!

I can’t help but notice that although you called your Bolt an appliance, you continue to mention this handy feature and that handy gadget. I get that it’s not your pickup but it seems like a pretty cool commuter vehicle. I’ve never driven one but I’m finding the idea very interesting lately. We are retired and have three vehicles ( down from five) and I just can’t justify it to myself. Fess up, you enjoy it…. don’t you?

Haha while it is an appliance, I do enjoy using it. Kind of like enjoying a nice shower, or new beer fridge, or wineador. For example I got off of an international flight at about 11pm and was facing an hour "drive" home. But with SuperCruise, all I had to do was monitor the car as it drove itself the ~65mi of highway home. Then again, I went and picked up a Christmas tree in my truck the next day and was reminded of how much I love it; sitting in the drivers seat is like the warm embrace of an old high school lover.

Sounds to me like the best of both worlds…. just saying.
I did not have on the 2019, but back then you could download the Camera app from the Chevy store.

On my 22, I hit the home button and I get a bunch of icon's, one being a camera, hot it and it remains on for 5-10 seconds

On my 2019 Colorado Z71 you went to the second screen and there was one of the icons says camera. Same thing can be driving and tap it and camera comes on for a few seconds. I moved the icon to the first screen for more convenience.
I have a fiberglass cap, or topper, on my 2018 Canyon which I really like. It makes the truck far more useful for me. However, in typical MN winter weather it is impossible to see through the dirty rear window on the cap. I have used the camera, but guess what gets dirty when the rear window gets dirty? Glad I mastered side mirrors, and glad the mirrors on the Canyon are so effective. I echo the above thoughts on the pleasure of driving the Canyon. First drive at the dealership it felt right. Big enough to do real work, and small enough to be fun to drive. I loved my Suburban, Silverado, and Escalade for various reasons, but just feel at home in the Canyon.
