AT4 vs Denali Canyon question

4574 Views 25 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  JimR70
Hi,

Does anyone know if there is actually additional sound dampening with the Denali Canyon vs AT4?

Also, is there a noticeable difference in mpg between AT4 and Denali trims due to the lack of front air dam?

Hoping to decid on one of these trucks over the weekend. I definitely prefer the AT4 look and am mostly on the high way...hard choice. TIA

Both the AT4 and Denali come with an airdam, either you or the dealer can remove it. The mpg hit for removing it is not as noticeable for gas motors because they already get crappy mileage compared to the diesel.

As for sound dampening, I highly doubt the Denali is any different.
And if it helps with your decision, personally I prefer the AT4 trim because I am not a big fan of chrome. Plus there are not many options from the Denali that you can't already get on the AT4.

I’ve only had my truck a couple of months and I’ve never driven an AT4 but my little Denali is pretty sweet in my opinion. Black wheels, tinted windows, dark Weathertech side window deflectors, satin black retrax bed cover…. Doesn’t look to shabby. My decision was heavily influenced by the cocoa interior. It makes me feel….. special.

Aside from visuals and additional interior colour options there are no differences between a Denali or an AT4 fully loaded. Same mechanically, Denali just comes standard with everything, AT4 comes standard with 4x4 and the exterior colour cues while leather and some of the driver assists are optional.

If you like the AT4 look go for that. You'll save some money by not getting all the bells and whistles while still getting a well equipped truck. On the other hand a Denali will be better on the highway because the AT4 come standard with Duratrac tires which will not be a friend for your fuel economy.

What do you plan on using the truck for?
Ventilated seats on the Denali

Why are people who bought the AT4 getting a cash settlement for the wrong EPA rating on their sticker?
does the AT4 sit higher? I thought it was due to no Air Dam...or is it just the tires?

okay, I looked it up and it is the air dam or lack of air dam, plus the level....
then I went on GM site

Window sticker was off. The off road package usually is just slightly lower mpg wise due to tires. Not a big deal but a good deal for buyers.

that cocoa/dark atmosphere interior is killer nice! one of those options that the AT4 is missing

Jake the trucks are basically the same less for tires wheels and a few odd options like decent control on the AT4 and vented seats on the Denali.

the Denali comes with everything and only paint and a few small options are available. The AT4 is more you buy what you want or option packages.

if you off road or like the AT4 it is a hood truck. The Denali is more for on road driving and if you shop around they at times can be found at a discount that make it a good value if you want all the options.

I have a Denali and I was shopping a SLT at the time. The Denali had discounts on it that it was priced nearly as the SLT but it had the running boards, bed liner bed lights, vented seats, bigger wheels and tires and a number of other small options that were worth more than the price difference. So I bought the Denali.

You are good either way. I like both trucks and they fixed one thing in the Denali I did not like. They had bad fake wood but now have real wood trim now.

The GMC has some extras you may not have noticed as the dash has a pad and real aluminum trim over the Chevy. It has a padded arm rest the Chevy used to not have.

The devil is in the details. But With either truck you will not go wrong. Just a matter of what you want in it and trim you like.

I know on the full size trucks Denali usually adds resale value. Not sure how much here.

I love that interior. The Denali just got it a year or so ago.

The AT4 comes with 17” wheels with 265/65R17 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires and the Denali comes with 20” wheels with 255/55R20 “All Season” tires. GMC says ground clearance is the same. Tire overall diameter is pretty much the same. Off road taller sidewalls are your friend. I’m not sure that I get the little wide 20s on a pickup, myself. I mean, I guess they look cool but it’s not a Porsche.

Yeah, the AT4 package doesn’t really do much besides different trim pieces. I like the taller side wall for a better ride.

People seem to forget the AT4 only gets a standard levelling kit on the full size. AT4 canyons DO NOT come levelled from factory, if a customer opts for levelling its the same 1.25” kit you can buy for any canyon/colorado. They also won’t come from factory without the air dam, the dealer can take it off. Even the additional skid plates, front under the engine and mid under the transfer case are the same plastic skid plates you’ll find on the denali, or you can option stiffer, I think they’re aluminum, skid plates as a dealer installed option

Why buy either, unless you want a diesel I would wait for 2023, they will have the interior upgrades like the 2022 Silverado/Sierra and the AT4x will be far more capable than the AT4. The Canyon/ Colorado will finally be an up to date truck, with 2.7L turbo and 10 speed. The 2.7L in the Silverado has been bulletproof, has more reliability than the current V8's or 3.0L. Drive one and you would swear it was a big V8 the way it pulls the grades. Makes the V6 feel anaemic.

Plus I they will have a AT4X which is the ZR2 GMC and expect the Denali will have more options.

did you not read my post where I copied straight from the GM website that the Canyon AT4 comes with the level and No AIR DAM, hince less gas mileage rating?

WOW

This one? Yeah I read it. Although the gas mileage was due to the aggressive factory installed duratracs. Look, I sell these, They don’t come standard with all that, those are all options and accessories. They literally will charge you money to get the package that installs the skid plate with 4 bolts and to take out 6 bolts to remove the air dam. My dealership orders the skid plates as an accessory and add them to the price, it’s cheaper for the customer and then we aren’t responsible for throwing a bunch of the air dams away
My 2 cents, at this point there is no reason to buy a new current twin unless you absolutely need one, and even then I'd be getting a bridge vehicle . The new ones are coming out and the motor and trans is tested and seems to be true, the interior spy shots put the current Gen (albeit released 8 years ago) to shame and there's an actual midsize market they are competing in now, not just a tacoma so it will be something that is on the same level as the every spiraling half ton market

Thanks for the answer! I'd like to do some trails and also a daily driver and road trips on the highway (around New England).

The difference in gas mileage is not very much, likely 1-2 MPG less with the duratracs, someone else here can correct me if they have a different experience.

You will here a little bit more noise from the Duratracs but they will get you through snow, mud, sand and work extremely well on loose surfaces.
