For people who need to be on the roads, making sure your tires are properly inflated will not only save you money at the pump, allow the tires to perform properly in the rain, but will also aid in proper wear.
  • Fuel Efficiency - For every 1 PSI drop in tire pressure the US Department of Energy estimates a loss of .4% in fuel efficiency. Although this may not seem like much, over time it can add up.

  • Wet Performance – When a tire is under inflated the contact patch won't be evenly distributed on the road surface. This restricts the treads ability to displace water properly and can cause hydroplaning.

  • Wear – Improper tire inflation can cause irregular treadwear and potentially damage, resulting in reduced life and early replacement.

One thing not mentioned is "factory" settings. Factory figures usually make sense for most cars, but trucks are another matter. Recommended settings for the front are generally good provided you don't have a snow plow. The rear however are given with the assumption that the truck is loaded, which often is not the case. This get really crazy with dually trucks - run those "E" ten ply rated tires at the recommended 80 psi without a load will shake your fillings loose. The best method is have your truck weighed at each axle to see exactly how much weight each tire is carrying. Then contact the tire manufacture to find out how much air pressure they recommend.

Remember the Ford / Firestone fiasco? In the end, it was determined that in order to get a better ride, Ford was recommending a lower pressure than was safe for the tire.
