I have been looking to buy a new-to-me diesel colorado. I've been looking for a few months and found a 17-crew cab with 146k miles, for 21k purchase price. I do know that they can tend to have a few issues around that mileage. I have read about both timing belt and transmission issues. I also found an identical truck with 93k miles for 25.5k. My question is would it be worth it to spend more money to get the truck with fewer miles or save the money for maintenance on the truck with higher miles? I am aware they will both need servicing in their own ways but how many miles are these trucks running for? If I buy the high miles is it going to need a total rebuild at 200k? Is it similar to the bigger diesel when properly maintained that they will last 300k+? Just trying to get some advice on what truck to pick. One side note- the cheap truck is an hour away and the expensive one is 1400 miles away across the country. Thanks in advance. Any advice is appreciated.

Depends on the general condition of the truck and what has and has not been done regarding maintenance.

The cheaper truck is a local truck and I have seen it in person and met with the owner. It is in immaculate condition inside and out. It was bought new by the company in 17. The service records are exactly what the manual has suggested. Fuel filters and oil filters all done on time and by the dealer. Timing belt has not been completed. Fluids have all been flushed and changed according to schedule. The miles are 99% highway miles, was used as a commuter truck to go between company locations. It has never had a trailer behind it and the back seats haven't ever been sat in. IT has a roll up tonneau cover with full bed liner.

Now as for the other truck I couldn't tell you much. It is being sold at an auction but has a clean title and clean CarFax. It looks clean inside and out but that's all I can attest to.
That’s a steep price for a truck with 146K on it.

its crew cab, 4wd, with some extras. What do you think a fair price would be? 17 z71 duramax

I'd argue your situation is similar and could give you some leverage to maybe negotiate a better price

When I was looking for my truck, I came across similar vehicles. This was in 2020, the prices were in the $16-18k range. I wasn’t scared by the mileage, but knew they were selling to avoid doing the timing belt and water pump. So I would use that as a negotiation point. the service history is great, so I would not have a problem going for it as long as can negotiate the price down 2-3 thousand dollars.
