I found out last summer the frame was Swiss cheese behind the fuel tank. I was quoted $1000 to plate the frame and fix it. I found a rear half of a frame in pretty good shape but held off the repair and let it go through the winter. Last week I found out it was far worse now. Pretty much the top rail of the frame and the cab mount were the only things holding the drivers side together. A friend with a shop helped me and we have the project almost finished.. Here are some pics of disassembly.

We had some troubles like measuring, differences between the original and the newer replacement, stubborn spring bolts, etc, but we came up with solutions for them and I'm happy to discuss them.

Does it appear to have some rust issues in the new back half?

I pity you guys living in the salt belt. Neither my '09 nor my newer '12 have anywhere near that kind of rust on the frame. Keep up the good work!

Thanks!! There was a fair amount of rust scale when I bashed it with a hammer and blew it out but not horrible. After the final welding I have a guy that's going to coat the inside with something to help stop any more rust.

It's been coming along. I needle scaled and brushed the frame before painting with Magnet Coatings chassis paint. Pro-Tip: WEAR GLOVES!!! I have a little more painting to go and I've been doing little things like replacing u-joints, getting out broken bolts, etc.

Well there is one good thing about living in California, no rust.

That’s going to be nice when you’re done man. Nothing like completing a frame off or major frame repair yourself!!!!
Good work dude. I’m prepping to pull the body off my cj5 Jeep again. I did a Matkins frame back in 2002 along with all new suspension, rebuilt tranny and painted everything. I beat her up last summer so it’s getting pulled apart to her bones again for the same treatment. (Matkins L2 frame holding up quite well) all new suspension, paint everything and probably going to put a T18 and Dana 300 with the terra-low gears and cloaking kit. Wife doesn’t know just how deep this will go again but she should be done for next spring. (Wife thinks it’s a weekend project until I pull the tub)

I put Tera-Low gears in my Colorado. They have been excellent.

I would have preferred a Dana 300 but it wouldn’t fit. I ended up with a Dana 20 instead.

I've pretty much wrapped up the repair.

I had to modify my 2007 step-n-tow bumper to bolt in. My 2007 frame had nuts welded inside the frame and the bumper bolted on outside. The 2008-up frames have holes and the bumper supports go inside and get bolts into them. Just yesterday I found a 2010 Z82 bumper with receiver and installed it. I still have a bit of painting to do but overall it has come out as perfect as I could want it to. If anyone has questions about this, I'm happy to help.

I'll put up with the rust if it means keeping my AR-15's, 30 round mags and suppressors. 🙂
Tell me about it, around here just owning a gun and the laws change you can become an instant felon.

Don't degrade retarded people like that. Your legislators are blooming idiots that couldn't poor piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the bottom. Unfortunately, more and more legislators across this country are becoming like that.
